We don’t yet know how much water is needed for a city to be water-conserving, but city officials are considering whether to install a water purification system to make sure residents are getting the most water possible.
The Aquadine Water Purifier, a water filtration system, was unveiled earlier this year at the Denver Zoo.
The city hopes to install the system on public streets, and is also considering how to treat wastewater for reuse.
It’s the latest project to address water shortages and concerns about contamination of the water supply.
The aquadines are not cheap: the system costs $1,200 a month, and city officials say they’ll need $5,000 to $6,000 for the first year, $1 million for the second, and $4 million for three years.
The Denver Public Works Department has spent more than $1.8 million so far on the project.
The goal is to have the system operational by 2020, but officials are still assessing how much money will be available to buy more equipment, hire more water purifiers, and build more water lines.
The system works by sucking water through a filtrix and pumping it into a tank.
After that, the filtors turn on and off, which filters out some of the contaminants.
Water purifiers can be expensive.
According to a recent study, water purifying equipment costs about $10,000.
The EPA estimated that a $3,000 filter will filter out up to one-quarter of a liter of water.
A $1 filter will remove up to half a liter.
A standard-sized filtress will cost about $2,000, according to the EPA.
“It’s not the cheapest thing, but it’s the most effective,” said David Roesel, who oversees water quality for the Colorado Department of Water Resources.
The new aquadining system has already cost about two years to build and install.
City officials have also been trying to figure out how to get the filtrate into people’s homes, and whether the system will work well on rural areas where the water is scarce.
The problem with having filtric systems in the wild is that the filters often break down.
Roessel said the city will need to use new filters to test for contaminants before using the new ones in homes.
Some residents have been worried about water quality issues because they believe the system might contain contaminants that could be toxic to humans.
